INDICACIONES: Equinos: Giardiasis. Tricomoniasis. Amebiasis. Enfermedades infecciosas causadas por microorganismos sensibles a este quimioterápico. Indicado en afecciones provocadas por agentes anaerobios, especialmente cuando estos no responden a los antibióticos clásicos. Neumonías. Pleuritis. Peritonitis. Osteomielitis. Abscesos. Tétanos. Disbacteriosis intestinales.
Caninos: Giardiasis. Amebiasis. Balantidosis. Tricomoniasis. Enfermedades infecciosas provocadas por microorganismos anaerobios. Coadyuvante en el tratamiento de la enteropatía inflamatoria crónica idiopática, colitis eosinofílica, colitis ulcerativa histiocítica, colitis pseudomembranosa. En ambas especies, como preventivo en situaciones que puedan ser causa o inicio de una infección anaeróbica (Cirugía intestinal baja).
CONSIDERACIONES: El metronidazol es un quimioterápico sintético, que no influye sobre otros antibióticos o quimioterápicos. Es un antiprotozoarico y antibacteriano que carece de efecto sobre las bacterias aerobias.
ADMINISTRACION: Vía oral. La dosis indicada debe ser administrada al animal con alguna sustancia palatable, agradable a la especie destinada. Por ejemplo, miel en los equinos, carne en los caninos, ya que su sabor amargo dificulta la ingestión voluntaria por parte del animal. Una vez mezclada con el alimento elegido, la combinación debe ser administrada inmediatamente.
DOSIFICACION: Equinos adultos: 15 a 25 mg. por kg. de peso vivo por día, dividido en 2, 3 o 4 tomas (cada 12, 8 o 6 horas), durante 6 a 8 días, salvo indicación de profesional actuante. En la práctica,10-12 comprimidos por día.
Potrillos: 10 a 15 mg. por kg. de peso vivo por día, dividido en 2, 3 o 4 tomas, durante 6 a 8 días.
Caninos: 25 a 65 mg. por kg. de peso vivo por día, dividido en 3 tomas (cada 8 horas), durante 6 a 8 día.
En ambos casos, estas dosis e indicaciones pueden ser modificadas por el profesional actuante.
ADVERTENCIAS CONTRAINDICACIONES y RESTRICCIONES DE USO: No debe ser administrado a animales con trastornos hepáticos, hembras gestantes o en lactación. Tampoco en animales que presenten discrasias sanguíneas, hipersensibilidad a los derivados imidazólicos o enfermedades activas del Sistema Nervioso Central. No asociarlo a fenobarbital, fenitoina o cimetidina.
EFECTOS COLATERALES POSIBLES: Si bien es una droga muy poco tóxica, eventualmente puede provocar diarreas, estomatitis, náuseas y trastornos nerviosos.

Coadjutor in the treatment of chronic-idiopatic inflammatory enteropathy, eosinophilic colitis, hystiocitic ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis. In both species, as a prevention in situations that might be the cause or the beginning of an anaerobic infection (lower intestine surgery).
To be used in sport horses and dogs. Under no circumstances must it be used in horses that might be used for human food consumption.
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION: Oral route only. The indicated dose must be administered to the animal with some palatable substance, pleasant for the intended species (for example, honey for horses, meat for dogs), for its sour taste makes it difficult for the animal to take it voluntarily. Once mixed with the selected food, the combination must be immediately administered.
DOSAGE: Adult horses: 15 to 25 mg/kg live weight per day, divided in 2, 3 or 4 takes (every 12, 8 or 6 hours), during 6 to 8 days, except otherwise indicated by the acting professional. In practice, 10 tablets twice a day.
Foals: 10 to 15 mg/kg live weight per day, divided in 2, 3 or 4 takes, during 6 to 8 days, except otherwise indicated by the acting veterinarian.
Dogs: 25 to 65 mg/kg live weight per day, divided in 3 takes (every 8 hours), during 6 to 8 days, except otherwise indicated by the acting professional.
WARNINGS, CONTRAINDICATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS OF USE:
It must not be administered to animals with liver diseases, pregnant mares or in lactation. It must not be used, either, in animals with blood dyscrasia, hypersensitivity to imidazole derivatives, or with active CNS diseases. Do not associate with phenobarbital, phenytoin or cimetidine. It must never be administered to animals for consumption. Keep out of the reach of children.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: Although this drug is very little toxic, it can eventually produce certain side effects, such as diarrhea, stomatitis, nauseas, vomits and nervous disorders. These disorders usually appear when the drug is administered in very high doses.
CONSIDERATIONS: Metronidazole is a synthetic chemotherapy drug that does not have influence over other antibiotics or chemotherapy drugs. It is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial drug that has no effect over aerobic bacteria, except for an inhibiting action over S. Aureus and E. Coli.
